John (Jack) Stark Adamson. (1920 - 1992)
Marine Artist & Master Mariner
Jack's paintings encompassed a broad
range of subjects from seascapes, landscapes, portraits and still
lifes during his lifetime, but his main passion
was the sea and the tall
ships that sailed on them.
Working tall ships hauling jute, tea and wool,
clipper ships, general traders, barquentines... with
names like Old Kensington, Collingwood, British
Merchant,
Ariel, Salamis, Oberon, Thessalus and Garfield. A
few of these sailing ships retired gracefully
but most met tragedy at sea or at home. Weather,
marine hazards, fire and war among other fates happened
often to these magnificent tall ships.
The tall ship gallery you are about to view will
also give you a little general history about each
tall ship including dimensions, general cargo carried
and any known facts about the fate of the vessel.
Learn a little maritime history and experience an
age of peril and adventure which, like so many things
of the past, have almost disappeared into obscurity.
Enjoy the site and please take a minute to read about the
artist.
